History

Tullow R.F.C was founded in 1928, but it had a very stop start existence over the following thirty years or so. It wasn't until 1971, when it was reformed under a more sound footing, that it took a deep root in the community.

A very interesting footnote is that many of the same families involved in 1928 are still actively involved to this day, e.g. the Brownes, the Roches, the Dawsons and the Kennys. Over the past thirty years the club has gone from strength to strength both on and off the field and today stands proudly and firmly established in the greater Rugby family.

Former Club player Bernard Jackman went on to play at Provincial level with Leinster and won his first of many caps at full international level against Japan in 2005.

Another local boy, Sean O Brien, captained the Irish U-18 XV in search of the Triple Crown.  He was part of the Ireland U20 Squad that won the Grand Slam in 2007.  He has since gone on to join Leinster and Ireland at full International level, was named as ERC Player of the Year in 2011 and recently was named Man of the Match in the Ireland V Italy at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.  In previous years Mick Jackman has represented Ireland at A level and Harry Byrne at U-19 level.

We are justifiably proud of all four. At the moment we are fielding teams at all levels from U-8s to U-20s, as well as three adult teams. Our U-20s were unfortunate to lose narrowly in the final of the Gale Cup last year.

This concentration on Youth rugby has been the life blood of the club and we acknowledge the Trojan work put in by various coaches over the years. Our facilities are second to none and include two full size playing pitches, one of which is flood-lit and the other is fully enclosed with a small grandstand for the comfort of our patrons.

A particular notable event in our history was 1994 when we hosted the Leinster Provincial Towns Cup final. Our club house, which extends to 4,500 sq. ft. includes bar facilities, ballroom, changing rooms and showers. We have sub-committees working at the various activities of the club as well as a very active ladies committee.

We are happy that the club is in very good hands and can look forward to the future with confidence.
